Lens and Pixel Count

Canon has been exciting the market lately with one of its newest releases: the Canon Vixia HFS10 ($1,299.99 online). For the higher-end consumer, this model is promising a lot of improved and new features.

When a consumer walks up to the camcorder, they are drawn to the size of the lens barrel. It is very large. While the barrel makes the lens look enormous, the lens is, while still bigger M6091 battery than most models in this price range, fairly normal in size.

The pixel count is also quite impressive. At 8.5 megapixels, it makes the 3.3 megapixels of only a year ago seem tiny. Canon has also expanded the size of its CMOS sensor. LCD Screen and Features

Canon has improved its design on this model. Oftentimes, Canon sacrifices design when trying to pile on as many features as possible. But, this model isn't too bad. The HFS10 comes with a nicely padded hand strap for long hours of recording. It's very thick and hugs the hand perfectly.

The only issue with the hand strap has to do with what's underneath it. Canon has placed the access to the component-out, USB and HDMI under the strap. The only good thing is that you won't need these while you're out in the field. You only need them when you go to download and BTP-58A1 battery edit your footage.

The only thing that was a really big disappointment was the zoom toggle button. Canon has been having issues with the zoom toggle for years, and here the problems persist. It feels inferior to most toggle buttons, but it was at least responsive to touch.

The Good

The HDC-SD9 is a flash based camcorder, which A1012 battery makes it pretty light. One of the things I liked about the design was the placement of the buttons; they were on the side of the camera body, inside the LCD screen. I liked this a lot because a lot of camcorders I've used have had some of the main buttons that I use a lot (like the zoom button, for instance) on the side of the LCD screen. This gets very annoying, because you have to prop the camera on one hand and press the tiny buttons inside the screen with another, and not only does that make your hand hurt, it makes the footage shaky M7318 battery as well.

The placement of the SD card slot is also very convenient, placed right underneath the battery. The colors were saturated when I filmed outside, which I kind of liked, but the footage came out a bit sharp.

The Bad

One thing that really got on my nerves was the fact that if you wanted to download footage from the camcorder to your battery computer, you have to take out the battery. This is because the port for the power supply is behind the battery; you have to remove the PowerBook G3 battery to get at it. And, like may HD camcorders, the camcorder needs to be plugged in, not on battery power, to download video. And, to tell you the truth, I'm not the best with putting in and taking out batteries, and I like to avoid it whenever possible, so this feature really annoyed me.

Another thing I hated about the SD9 is that you have to open the little LCD window to take out the battery. If you close the LCD screen, the camera goes into standby mode. If you take the battery out while it's in standby mode, you're stuck that way. I had to do a lot of button-pressing and camera-banging to get it out of standby mode once it got PowerBook G4 battery stuck.

The software that comes with the SD9 has a few bugs in it, so make sure you do an internet search to see if those bugs have been worked out.

The Bottom Line

The SD9 is a great little camera with a cute little price tag. It has a lightweight, convenient design that's easy on the eyes. I'd recommend this camera for those with a little more patience; the bugs in this camera, although there aren't many, might make you want to throw it out the PowerBook G4 15inch battery window.

Open the case, and you'll find the interior lined with genuine leather, complete with stitching which has to do with keeping the leather attached to the chassis, but looks stunning. The titanium-alloy case, finished in a glossy dark gray, looks and feels strong. The VX3 also comes with a custom Bluetooth mouse which matches the color scheme, a custom sleeve, and the A1185 battery already-mentioned messenger bag. It is undoubtedly a luxury product, and like any good supercar, the VX3 will turn heads wherever it goes.

Voodoo Envy 133

Want to be the Envy of every Apple user fondling his new Macbook Air? Look no further than the Envy 133, made by Voodoo. Once known for it's gaming computers, Voodoo was recently bought by HP, which as changed the company into a maker of premium quality computers. The Envy was built to be HP's rival to the Macbook Air, and it shows. Like the Air, it has a 13.3" screen, and like the Air, it is well under an inch thick. In terms of functionality, the Envy is a home-run. It's chassis is built out of carbon fire, resulting in high stiffness despite the thin profile. This allows the Envy to equip a removable battery. The Envy also has more usable USB ports and a power cord which attaches at a much better M9324 battery angle.

But functionality isn't what the Envy is really all about. This is a computer built from the ground up to be sexy. It's ultra-glossy finish gives the illusion that the Envy is made out of aluminum rather than carbon-fiber, and while the Air appears smooth and tame, the Envy appears rough-edged and wild. The logo on the lid says it all - where an Air would have the ever-friendly apple logo, the Envy features Voodoo's menacing tribal mask.

On a basic level, Envy has looks a-plenty, but if you really want to set yourself apart from everyone else hopping on the thin-and-light bandwagon, the Envy has a party piece you just might be interested in: custom colors. Besides the base Black Weave, fourteen other colors are available. My favorites are Moroccan Blue and Sunset. Being unique does carry the hefty M8403 battery price-tag of $500 to $600 dollars, but if you've got money to burn and want to get noticed, its a worthwhile upgrade.

Why I needed a new mouse

One day last summer I had a mind opening experience, although I did not realize it then. At the time, I was sure it was a tragedy. I was sitting on the couch at my sister's house editing an article for publication on Bright Hub, with my laptop computer on my lap, plugged into an extension cord, with the AC adapter cord hanging down to the floor, as was the cord for the mouse. I put the laptop down on the couch and stood up to walk into the kitchen. I took a large step to clear the extension cord, and snagged the mouse cord with my foot without realizing it. One further step, and the computer and I were on the floor. After picking myself and the laptop up, I sat down again and tried to turn it on. It was dead.

I learned, with the help of an article on putting your internal hard drive into an external enclosure and several emails from fellow Bright Hub contributing editor Lamar Stonecypher, that I could remove my hard drive, put it into an enclosure, and rescue documents and pictures from my scrambled hard drive. I replaced the hard drive in my laptop with the help of the Dell manual, reinstalled Vista, and used the touch pad to order a cordless mouse.

I got the Logitech V220 notebook mouse, in bright red, to match my resurrected laptop. The mouse felt great. It fit my hand better than my old mouse ever had, and it came with a mini receiver that stuck out of the USB about an inch and a half. I loved it. There was no way I would ever trip over that! And I never did. However, over the space of the next five months, I managed to break off the receiver three times. Once I put it into the laptop bag without removing the receiver. When I pulled it out, it was at a 45 degree angle, and when I tugged on it, the plastic case case came off in my hand. Another time I was using the laptop in bed, because I had a cold, and the receiver caught in the sheets and bent at a 60 degree angle. That time the case stayed on it for a day or so. The last time, I knocked the receiver against the side of the couch and the plastic case came off completely. Luckily, Logitech will let you order a new receiver for $10. After the third time, I decided that there had to be a better EVO N600C battery solution.

I went to the Newegg site and looked through all the cordless mice they had. It seemed that there were mice with smaller wireless receivers now. I found one that looked like the receiver was about an inch long, and hoped it would be less fragile. However, it was blue and gray, so I clicked onto the next page, looking for one that matched my laptop better. In the middle of the page, I saw the Logitech V450 nano mouse.

Specifications said the wireless receiver, when plugged into the USB port, only stuck out a quarter inch. The description said it could be left in the laptop all the time, without getting damaged. They even had a red one - but they were out of it. The other option was jet black, with a red side stripe. It was a little different in shape than my old mouse, but was also described as notebook sized. I went ahead and ordered the black one, for $42.99. Newegg ships quickly, and I received it EVO N610C battery about 2 days later.

The Logitech V450 Nano Mouse has the tiniest wireless receiver I have ever seen. It really does just stick out a mere quarter inch. My previous mouse was an optical mouse, which was a step up from the wired ball mouse I had started with, but the responsiveness of the laser mouse was definitely better. I also had much finer control over where the cursor went. I found it was possible to sign my name in paint using the mouse.

The wireless receiver now lives in the back of my laptop. My laptop slips in and out of the laptop bag without snagging. It rests on the blankets on the bed without the receiver ever budging. And it has hit the arm of the couch several times. Nothing fazes it.

There is a switch on the bottom of the mouse to power off the mouse, although the packaging said the battery could last up to a year. If you do want to remove the receiver, there is a place inside the battery lid to store the receiver, but I never bother. It is 2.4 GHz wireless, which documentation says gives speeds up to 300 times faster than other mice. I certainly have noticed no lag in EVO N620C battery using it, even with the laptop across the room and attached to the TV.

The Logitech V450 is a three button mouse, with the scroll wheel as the third button. It feels solid in the hand, and the sides are slightly rubbery, which gives a nice grip. The scroll wheel doesn't feel flimsy, and all of the buttons have a nice clicking sound when you use them, although the scroll wheel button is a little stiffer to push. It is a tilt wheel, if you use the provided software, for side to side scrolling, and the scroll wheel can go click by click or spin freely to move you an amazing distance down a page.

The mouse is plug and play, and can be used on any Presario 1200 battery Windows or Mac machine. It also works on my Linux netbook, although Logitech does not list Linux as one of the supported OS. It came with a CD for drivers, although I have not needed to use it. However, the software on the CD does allow you to program the third button. A user complaint about the provided software is that it takes up 60 mb. This does seem excessive for drivers for a mouse that is already plug and play.

If your mouse does not find your computer when you first insert the receiver, the on/off button on the bottom of the mouse can be pushed in slightly to search for the wireless connection. There is a small green LED indicating the mouse is on, and another green LED lights up on the top of the mouse when it is looking for a wireless connection.

The red stripe on the side of the mouse follows the curve of the top, almost like a racing stripe on a car. It actually seems to be an embedded piece of red plastic, and goes across the front of the mouse as well. A toggle switch on the bottom of the mouse opens the battery cover, which is on the top of the mouse where the middle of your palm rests. The mouse bottom has four very slightly raised Presario 1800 battery plastic pads, which it glides on over practically any surface. The documentation does say that it will not work well on a glass or mirrored surface.

It is slightly larger than my previous optical cordless notebook mouse, and slightly more squared off. While it is smaller than most desktop mice, it is not sized for a child. It is 4 x 2.24 x 1.5 inches, and comes with a 3 year warranty.

Logitech also provides the option of using the mouse with your desktop computer - feasible even for people without smaller hands, because it is not really a mini mouse. For those wishing to use the mouse on their desktop, Logitech provides a USB extension cord, allowing the cord to be plugged into the back of your desktop, but the receiver to be accessible from the front. This does really negate the point of the nano receiver, but does give you the capacity of a smaller cordless laser mouse. However, I must point out that there are comparable cordless laser mice at a lower price, if you are not interested in the nano receiver. If I ever move back to using a desktop computer, I will set my jet black nano mouse up with Presario 700 battery it, and get myself the red nano that will match my laptop.

The mouse itself has fallen on a hardwood floor several times without any damage. Even the battery cover did not pop off.

Conclusion Rating

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase. I have a cordless mouse with a nano wireless receiver, eliminating problems of the receiver breaking inadvertently, and it is a very sturdy comfortable mouse with laser responsiveness. User reviews were almost completely ecstatic.

It is priced higher than I would prefer. Online sources currently list it at prices ranging from $35 to $50 USD, but one user said he had gotten Presario 900 battery his for $31. The price and the size of the drivers were really the only issues raised by users.

Combining pleasant aesthetics, weight, size, price, performance, reliability and portability into one highly efficient piece of hardware the Lenovo Thinkpad is a brilliant solution for many mobile computer needs. The ThinkPad’s casing is solid, but the highly 40Y6793 battery attractive finish can scratch easily if mistreated or used in highly volatile environments. However, in general the ThinkPad X300 is built for mobility and delivers an excellent end user experience.

As with all ThinkPad's the keyboard is outstanding, practically eliminating the need for double entry or mistakes, such is the responsiveness and durability of keys. Alongside the keyboard there are some highly impressive ‘quick’ buttons to access the backup and restore service, and an excellent guide to port utilization / hardware connectivity. The backup service navigates you to a highly impressive rescue and recovery interface which allows you to copy files to an external drive, restore partition, or revert back to the clean, factory default disk image. Most impressive however is the quick access facility to find local wireless network hotspots. This is extremely useful, providing a clear visual indication of access points in the vicinity, their signal strength and encryption status. The X300’s touchpad and trackpad are sensitive and responsive to action FRU 92P1125 battery but for those who so desire, the trackpad can also be disabled from use.

The 13.3” screen displays outstanding 1440 x 900 pixel resolution. Contrast, brightness and shading are appropriately balanced, and the ThinkPad’s LED technology is energy efficient. It has been known however that some color combinations sometimes appear washy during high motion screen projection.

For performance the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 is one of the top three in class. The Intel Core 2 Duo 1.2 Ghz processor may not pack much punch but with 2 GB memory the device is remarkably quick to deliver applications and process multiple tasks. It certainly is adequate for the everyday business user or casual gamer.

With a 64GB Solid State HDD, storage FRU 92P1121 battery capacity is not ideal, making this a horses for courses notebook, i.e. either look somewhere else or look to upgrade if you want extended storage space. Also be aware that this 64GB HDD has a recovery partition which reduces the amount of accessible storage space to around 40GB, which is cutting it fine and means you have to be selective in the games you play and media you can save. That said, Solid State drives are renowned for being ultra reliable, fast and supremely energy efficient.

In terms of connectivity the ThinkPad comes with Bluetooth, Wireless G and Draft-N, a gigabit Ethernet controller, DVD burner and Webcam. Lenovo have not added the now almost irrelevant modem slot as it is a safe assumption that most users of such mobile notebook technology will connect via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Bluetooth. There are also three USB slots which are far more Compaq Laptop Battery sensibly placed than those on the Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6410.

For such a small battery pack (six cell) you can get an adequate three and a half hours of power from the device even during high intensity use, which is only marginally less than the Apple Macbook Air with its non replaceable internal battery, and considerably more than the Toshiba Portege R500. However, as with so many other ultra portable notebooks this will not be enough for users who require all day power. As such you can insert a three cell battery pack into the optical drive Armada M700 battery bay (adding 2mm of thickness to unit) to provide six or seven hours of operability.

Conclusion

In conclusion the Lenovo ThinkPad X300 is arguably the best all round ultra portable notebook on the market today. Designed to be sleek and efficient, practical and portable. For a seemingly low end spec it performs admirably, even matching the Dell XPS 1330 in battery drain and multi task processing tests. The vivid 13.3” screen is even a match for the Sony VAIO. Lastly, it may have a high price but compared to the other notebooks in this category, at $2500 the ThinkPad X300 is very reasonable and the perfect mobile notebook companion for business. Combining pleasant aesthetics, weight, size, price, performance, EVO N400c battery reliability and portability into one highly efficient piece of hardware.

Noise. Depending on your system and the type of FRU 92P1167 battery hard drives you have, all that background defragmenting can get a little noisy as your hard drives are constantly working. I’m not 100 percent certain that this constant use of the drive is good for its lifespan, but I’ve never read anything that says it’s a bad thing. For the increase in performance, I can live with a little extra noise.

Another thing I noticed about Diskeeper is that when I’m watching TV, using Windows Media Center, every so often the playback will pause for a second and then resume. This is especially noticeable when I’m watching a recorded show. It almost seems like Diskeeper is trying to defragment the file while I’m watching it, but I haven’t been able to verify that. I don’t see this same behavior if I’m watching a DVD movie.

Although this isn’t really a negative, it is worth mentioning: the Diskeeper Service acts as a server on your system, which allows it to support networking and remote control of the Diskeeper Administrator. This means that if you’re running any firewall software, you’ll need to make sure that you allow Diskeeper to run as a server and access the Internet if you have automatic updating enabled. If you’d rather not allow the access, then you can disable automatic updating and support for networking.

User Interface Rating

If you install Diskeeper in "set it and forget it" mode, then you probably won’t be using the user interface much. But those that want to tweak some settings or have more ThinkPad Z60t battery of a manual control over what Diskeeper is doing will find the user interface very easy to use. All of the main features are immediately accessible from the Quick Launch pane on the left side of the screen. There are four categories you can choose from: Getting Started, which is where you can find help with all of Diskeeper’s features; Volume Properties, where you can control Automatic Defragmentation, I-FAAST, and Boot-Time Defragmentation (depending on which version you have); Analyze and Defragment Now, which is where you can perform manual scans and defragmentation; and Configure Diskeeper, which is where you’ll find all of the program options.

The rest of the UI consist of a menu bar and an icon-based toolbar that basically allow you to access the same features as the Quick Launch, and the main window. The main window is where you’ll see statistics about your drives, logs, and history files about what Diskeeper has done recently. There are also other statistics, but most people probably won’t have a need for them.

One thing I really liked was having all of the help information available on the first screen of the Quick Launch. It saves the new user a lot of time getting started with the program. Overall, it's a very user friendly interface.

What's Not:

Although the user interface is very easy to work with, it seems to be taken up with a lot of eye candy that isn’t really needed in the main screens. The features can stay, but I don’t really see a reason for them to be right there in front of you when you start the ThinkPad Z61t battery program. I’m also confused as to why the programmers chose to present all of the options in three different formats. I find the Quick Launch very useful, but why repeat the same options in a menu bar and in the form of colorful icons on a toolbar? Does the user really need three places to access the same features?

I found Diskeeper to be very easy to set up and use. I’ve looked at a number of programs recently that have taken a "set it and forget it" approach, and I think this new trend will make it easy for less-than-computer-savvy users to enjoy the protection against online threats and the benefits of keeping their PCs running at peak performance, without the hassle of having to know all the ins and outs of the various tools they should be running. Diskeeper ensures that your hard drive stays healthy, without the user having to remember to run periodic defragmentation. The background defragmentation Sony VGP-BPS8 battery of your hard drive also appears not to interfere with any computer operations or affect overall performance. An excellent product.

While Samsung may not be renowned for manufacturing personal computers, they have dipped their toe into the ultra portable notebook market with a highly efficient and multi-dimensional notebook, in the Samsung Q45. With an robust casing and neat, compact ThinkPad R60 battery design the Q45 looks professional and feels great in use. With an impressive set of features and a quality specification it offers much in terms of performance, connectivity, storage and visuals.

Weighing 1.86 kg the Q45 is one of the heavier ultra portable notebooks, primarily because it has a higher spec than most, and protective casing. Having made some adjustments to the design of the Q35, Samsung have done away with the silver chassis for a more slick look, and taking a leaf out of the Lenovo ThinkPad's book, have launched a professional, glossy black casing. However, as with the ThinkPad, this casing, while looking fantastic, is prone to scratches and 'grubby' fingerprint marks.

The Q45 has a 12.1" screen which delivers 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The screen has to be one of the best in class, with its Samsung Super Bright Gloss Layer, making images bounce ThinkPad T60 battery with color and vibrancy, whether in motion or still. However, as with the Dell XPS 1330 and unlike the Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook, the Q45 is not the best at deflecting light for multiple viewing angles.

The Samsung Q45 has a keyboard that matches the ThinkPad, which has for a long time been the ultimate Notebook PC keyboard manufacturer. Keys are firm yet responsive and are beautifully spaced for minimal duplication of effort. Again the half-size function keys are not the easiest to use, that said, this keyboard works perfectly in any tight-knit situation. The touchpad is a proportionate size, scrolls evenly and mouse action is delivered easily. I would have no problem with this 40Y6797 battery navigation aid, except that after a sustained period of use, the area around the wrist rest pad gets slightly warm. This is not a showstopper however, and certainly wouldn't make for an uncomfortable end user experience.

The Samsung Q45 comes with various choices of processor. All are high-powered, performance chipsets that can perform most tasks even those such as strategy gaming simulation, video suite editing and advanced presentation creation. Obviously the Q45 doesn't perform as well as dedicated notebooks and desktop PCs with their top of the range processing power, memory capacity and discrete bespoke graphics engines but for the gaming and business user you'll be hard pushed to find any application that cannot run supremely quickly on this device. The Q45 comes with Windows Vista Business as standard, a 2.4 GHz processor and 2GB RAM (expandable to 4GB) making it a very fast ultra portable. With an integrated Express chipset that can dynamically access system memory, and a discrete NVIDIA GE Force 8400 processor, with 128 MB 40Y6799 battery of dedicated video memory, the Q45 has no problem running any application, however graphics intensive.

The Q45 has a 160 GB HDD which runs at 5400 RPM and with divided partitions is fairly responsive. It would be good to see a Solid State HDD included in the build but the recovery partition is a nice touch and a crucial feature for the ultra portable user who in todays climate demands back-up facilities that are quick and reliable.

The Q45 comes with Wireless, Ethernet, Bluetooth, a multi-format jewel layer DVD burner, PC card slot, FireWire, microphone and headphone jack, flash card reader and USB (x2). There is also a 1.3 megapixel camera on the top of the screen which provides fairly FRU 92P1139 battery reasonable still and video imagery, however the WebCam is in a fixed position, meaning the screen in its entirety has to be moved to position the camera for optimum viewing.

Another area where the Samsung Q45 is impressive is in terms of battery life. The six cell battery pack provided as standard gives between five and six hours of battery power, however this is reduced considerably when running WiFi as you'll get around three hours. Charging the battery is incredibly quick, taking less than an hour to fully charge, and there are options to install a nine cell FRU 92P1141 battery pack if users require full day operability.

Conclusion

Where the Apple Mac book Air and Toshiba Portege R500 are the ultimate in ultra thin notebooks, the Samsung Q45, along with the Dell XPS 1330, is a truly exceptional performance notebook. It has an excellent build composition, robust yet manoeuvrable in equal measure and is perfectly balanced for mobile use. With an integrated WebCam, DVD burner and plethora of communication ports this is a supreme machine in every sense. It may weigh slightly more than some of the other offerings and does not look like FRU 92P1137 something out of Star Wars! but it does look good, performs magnificently and in general will provide the end user with excellent service, battery life and features.

If your laptop is starting to need charging more and more, and is lasting for less and less time, then you may start complaining, and even feeling that it is becoming less convenient. Whilst we may sometimes be able to plug our laptop in, it may not always be possible, and you can guarantee that when you have something really important to write or do, that’s when your laptop will run out of power and shut down.

Why calibrate the battery? By default, whenever you purchase a new laptop from Apple you will notice that the battery does have some charge on it to allow you to easilly set up your computer right away. But, the battery is never fully charged thus it is not synched with your computer. If you take a look at the batteries in MacBooks you will notice that on the older versions (black/white polycarbonate) there is an actual ThinkPad T42 button you can push that will give you a reading of the charge on the battery. Seize the power. With Windows, use the Power Management features (which you’ll find under the Control Panel) to choose appropriate settings. You’re looking to have the screen turn off and the computer shut down when not in use a lot more quickly when running from a Tecra 9100 battery.

Dim the lights. Li-ion batteries do not have problems with memory effect, but Li-ion batteries will lose effectiveness if they are overcharged or left in full charge without use. For example, if you rarely use the battery and keep the laptop plugged in, the battery will lose effectiveness. There can also be problems if the battery is fully charged and then not used, then charged again.

What should you do to keep your battery healthy?

1) Battery packs should be PA3395U-1BRS charged for 12 hours when you first get them. Laptop batteries are completely discharged at the time of purchase, and need a full charge before their first use.

2) For daily use, charge the battery to full, then run it on battery power only until it is completely out if using Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries (to prevent the “memory effect”) or mostly out for Li-ion (to prevent overcharging).

Battery Storage

If you do not use your laptop for extended periods of time (a week or more), remove the battery pack from the laptop. Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from heat and metal objects. To calibrate the battery:

Plug in the MagSafe power adapter and fully charge the MacBook or MacBook Pro battery until the light on the MagSafe connector changes to green and the PA3191U-1BRS Battery icon in the menu bar indicates that the battery is fully charged.

Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for two hours or longer. You may use your computer during this time as long as the power adapter is plugged in.

New features such as faster CPU's, GPU's, and wireless communication are constantly being added to laptops which contribute to the consumption of battery power. This in depth guide will touch on proper laptop and laptop battery care, enabling/disabling components and startup programs, all in the name of saving energy therefore extending the operating time of the Sony laptop battery battery.

Laptop Battery Care

Since the battery is one of the main factors of a low battery life, it's imperative to keep the battery in good condition. Although all batteries will eventually lose their charging potential, it is in your best interest to prolong their lifespan as much as possible.

Modern batteries are all Lithium-Ion. These batteries are much lighter than their older counterparts: NiCAD and NiMH, and are much easier to maintain. Lithium-Ion batteries can be recharged anytime however, there are still certain guidelines one needs to follow to maintain a healthy' VGP-BPS9 battery:

Long term storage -Storing a fully discharged battery (leads to a deep discharge state), as well as storing a fully charged battery may cause permanent damage to the battery, leading to a decrease in battery charge length. If you don't plan on using your laptop forat least 5-6 months, it's recommended that you remove and store the battery at a 50% charge in ideal room temperatures (22C).

Operating in High/Low Temperatures - If you use your laptop in temperatures higher than its specified operating range, 95'F (or 35'C), you may permanently damage your battery's capacity. I.e., your battery won't power your device as long on any given charge. You may also find that using your laptop in a very cold environment decreases VGP-BPS10 battery life.

Always fully charge your battery - Partially charging your battery can cause it to lose its charging potential. Your battery only has a set number of charges/discharges available before it dies. You want to fully utilize those charges. Try to avoid partially charging your battery.

Completely discharge the battery every 1-2 months - Its not recommended to use your portable laptop plugged in all the time. Even Li-Ion batteries should be completely discharged at least once per month. This ensures that the battery charges to max power, and keeps your battery healthy.

Tweaking the CPU

In most laptops, the CPU is the most PCG-R505 power-hungry component. Therefore, tweaking the CPU is the best method to improve your battery life.

The Basic CPU Tweak

This tweak will enable the basic, built-in power-saving function in your CPU. Go to your Control Panel, and select 'Power Options". There are 3 settings that matter to you:

Home/Office Desk - This setting will disable'the power-saving features for your CPU only when the notebook is plugged in the AC adapter. When Home/Office Desk is set while running the battery, the CPU can still throttle down.

Portable/Laptop - This will enable PowerNow!, Cool&Quiet, or SpeedStep, if your CPU supports it. These technologies all clock PCG-V505 down your CPU when not in use, thus saving you battery life while maintaining similar performance.

Max Battery - This setting is only useful when you are really desperate for battery life. By switching to this profile, the CPU will be set to the lowest setting, which should be around 600Mhz to 800MHz. This will severely hinder performance when needed, though.

Additional settings mentioned below will also improve your battery life. By setting the monitor or hard drive to turn off when not in use, you can also save battery power. Be sure to modify only the 'Running On Batteries' column.

Turn Off Monitor - This setting PCG-Z505 will turn off your monitor when not in use. Only turn this on if you won't need to look at your screen, eg if you're gone from the keyboard, or if you're only listening to music. However, if you are watching a movie, the monitor will still turn off after the allotted time has passed, making this a potentially annoying feature.

Turn Off Hard Disks - This setting turns off your hard drive(s) when not in use after the allotted time. This is rather useful, because many programs, when running, do not actually access the hard drive. However, setting it too low will prove an annoyance, because it takes a while for the hard drive to go from off to on.

System Standby - Again, like the previous settings, this will make your system go into Standby mode after the allotted time has passed. This is PA2487U battery only useful if you'll be gone from the keyboard.

Sony joins laptop battery recall list

Sony is recalling 90,000 of its Vaio laptop batteries across China and Japan following recent PCGA-BP71 battery recalls from other PC makers.

Rumors are also circulating that Toshiba is set to sue Sony, after it was forced to recall 340,000 laptop batteries made by Sony.

Sony said its recall is preemptive, and not a reaction to any particular problem. "There isn't a problem with the Vaio itself but after the problems with the other manufacturers, we decided (the recall was) something we had to do," a Sony spokesman VGP-BPL2 said.

Over the past two months, computer makers including Apple Computer, Dell, Fujitsu, IBM, Lenovo and Hitachi have recalled Sony batteries.

Mark Blowers, an analyst from Butler Group, told Silicon.com that the VGP-BPS3 battery recall has "grown into a huge problem."

"One moment it's one or two overheating batteries, now it's a manufacturing problem," he said.

The Sony battery recall is isolated within Japan and China but the analyst said he "can't believe it's not a global problem." He added: Sony "(doesn't) really know what the problem is so can't restrict recalls to a certain country."

If Toshiba files suit against Sony, it would be the first company affected by the Sony lithium-ion VGP-BPS5 battery recall to seek compensation.

Blowers said Sony offered to cover the cost of replacing the Toshiba batteries, as it did with every other company with battery problems.

"Toshiba is worried about its brand VGP-BPS8 being damaged," he said. "Toshiba may be gesticulating to get a better deal or more recompense with this move."

Reacting to rumors of the suit, Toshiba said in a statement: "We are studying various possibilities but nothing has been decided at this time and we are not commenting on rumors or speculations."

How to store a laptop battery properly to save it from an early death

In the last two parts of this series, I covered the factors of temperature and charging. While the high temperatures inside modern laptops Sony laptop battery are probably the worst enemy of a Li-ion battery, frequent discharge/charge cycles will negatively influence a battery’s life. If your laptop is a desktop replacement, then you probably only need the battery every now and then. It can be quite frustrating if you want to use your laptop for the first time after a year without AC, only to realize that your batteries are already dead even though you never really used them. However, if you remove the battery from the laptop and store it accurately, there is a good chance that it will be in good condition PCGA-BP2NY when you need it next time.

Don’t store a battery that is almost empty. Stored batteries continue losing energy, albeit at a much slower pace. If the stored battery is totally discharged, it could be destroyed.

Don’t store a fully charged battery. Fully charged batteries deteriorate faster than half-charged batteries. Most articles I’ve read recommended storing laptop batteries with a 40–60% charge.

Store the battery at a low temperature. I usually put it in the fridge. It keeps my PCGA-BP2R battery fresh and crisp. Check out this table at Wikipedia. 0°C (32°F) seems to be the best storage temperature. I wouldn’t put the battery in the freezer even though Li-ion batteries only freeze at approximately −40°C.

Store the battery in a dry place. A moist environment will accelerate discharging the battery

Check the battery state every now and then. I would remove it from the fridge at least every 30 days to calibrate it (fully discharge and charge).

Let the battery warm up a little before you put it back into your laptop. If the temperature is raised too fast, it will strain the PCGA-BP2S battery.

When I started this article, I thought I’d just share a few tips I’ve found on the web. But then I realized that there are quite a few things that can be done wrong with laptop batteries. That’s how I ended up with three articles. It is quite amazing that we can build space ships that have enough energy to fly to the moon but still have no decent portable energy sources for simple laptops. Perhaps fuel cells will change the picture in a few years.

A rechargeable battery is a battery Laptop Battery that can be recharged and used many times over. A rechargeable battery is sometimes referred to as a secondary cell as well, which is opposed to the non-rechargeable variety which is a primary cell.

One of the first applications for rechargeable batteries was the car battery. Today, many electronics use rechargeable PB992A batteries, among them cellular phones, laptops, MP3 players, video cameras, and cordless power tools. In fact, many modern products are designed to only use rechargeable batteries.Rechargeable batteries come in a variety of forms. Lead and sulfuric acid, as well as alkaline batteries can be rechargeable. Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries are an older type of rechargeable battery which were later surpassed by nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. NiCd batteries had a memory with a capacity that tended to decline over time. NiMH batteries are much less susceptible to memory loss. Lithium ion (Li-ion) and PB994A lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer) batteries are two other types of rechargeable batteries.

Although a rechargeable battery is generally more expensive than the disposable type, in the long run it is more economical as it can be used hundreds, if not thousands of times over. Furthermore, rechargeable NiMH or Li-on batteries work much longer on high-drain electronic equipment per charge than do single-use alkaline batteries.

There are also environmental benefits for using rechargeable batteries. Since one rechargeable battery can take the place of hundreds, even thousands, of single-use PB991A batteries, much less waste is generated. Dramatically reduced as well are the toxic materials sent to the landfill.

The limitations of rechargeable batteries, such as availability of a variety of sizes, are quickly diminishing. Rechargeable batteries are being manufactured in more sizes than previously. Battery capacities are increasing, self-discharge rates are getting longer, recharging times are getting shorter, and prices are decreasing. In addition, PCGA-BP1N battery chargers are getting smarter. Some have microprocessors that can read the type of battery that is placed into the charger and that prevent the user from undercharging or overcharging batteries.

The ability for reverse reaction, however, is not the sole characteristic of a rechargeable battery. It must also be able to undergo the reverse reaction both efficiently and safely many times. For example, some batteries can be recharged but because the chemical reactions are not completely reversed, they are only able to undergo the recharging process a few times, and their performance each successive time is less efficient. In addition, dangerous gases are sometimes PCGA-BP2NX battery built up, causing explosions or ignition either during or after recharging.

Some Guidelines for laptop batteries:

1. Remember that new batteries Laptop Battery generally arrive in a discharged state; you must charge them up for at least four hours before their first use.

Lithium Ion laptop batteries wear down because of two factors:

1. active usage in your laptop battery

2. natural aging of the laptop battery

-Solder it permanently to to the circuit, and fit it back into the plastic housing if its the same number of cells, if not be creative and line the cells up so it fits nicely below/behind/etc your laptop. Use duct tape or if you have, shrink wrap it with rubber shrink wrap.

-And remember, be careful around rechargeable lithium batteries.

-Update: I forgot to mention. Depending on the type of 338794-001 battery "smart" fuel gauge, adding more cells won't change the 'estimated hours left' displayed by the laptop, this is because the number of hours might be a fixed range. One might think that even if it's a fixed range, the number of hours left or % capacity left might be proportional to the actual number, however, depending on the type of circuit used to count the "electrons" (some use ic's called electron counters), it might assume the capacity to be fixed as well, thus the estimated capacity won't be proportional, just truncated. However, from my experience, the capacity gauge stops at about 7%, until the physical battery drains until 7%, so it still effectively alerts the user when the PP2182L battery is drained after below 7%.

-Update 2: At first I thought my smart board fuel gauge circuit was of fixed capacity, but after a few complete discharges, it recalibrated. Now it knows the capacity of my new pack and estimates accordingly (ranges from 9 - 8 hours total runtime depending if I'm constantly using my secondary hard drive accessed via USB and/or lcd backlight levels)

I had always wanted to do this. I wanted to make a computer that I could use while I was in the shower. I put it off for a while. Until one day, while reading other peoples instructables, I came across the PopSci contest. I thought, "when would be a better 345027-001 time to do this?". The answer, NEVER! step 2Taking the laptop apart

During this step you will realize that the laptop is made up of:

50% Hardware (CD Drives, PC card slots, etc)

25% Circuitry (Motherboard and Daughterboards)

Sometimes I wonder if the laptop manufaturers keep the screw companies in buisness.

The first step in taking apart a laptop pavilion dv6000 is to take out as much stuff as possible. Take out hard drives, CD drives, batteries, RAM, etc. Make sure you get it all.

The second step is to look for screws. You should find about 10-20 of them on the bottom. Look under stickers, rubber feet, plastic squares, inside the RAM area, and everywhere. You may find some on the top where the lights are and the screen connects. If your computer doesn't come apart somewhat easily, then you missed some screws.

Thirdly, take the screen off. Disconnect any wires leading to the motherboard. Make sure all screws on the screen are out and that you can safely remove the screen. Sometimes you hp dv6000 battery have to take off the decorative panel to get to the hinges. This is OK because we need to seal the screen anyway.

Finally take all daughterboards off of the motherboard. Store these in a safe place (do as I say, not as I do). Personally I think that laptop manufacturers liked their LEGOs as children. All of the daughterboards are ALWAYS connected with little clip-in slots. They NEVER are soldered. Hmmmm.

-if you're just replacing your EV088AA battery dead cells with new ones, obtain the same number of cells. As for choosing the capacity, bigger is better.

-Note how the cells are connected in series and parallel, and solder your new battery pack the same way.

-NOTE: do not remove dead battery cells from battery pack (explained later on)

-if you're increasing the capacity of battery pack, obtain nth times the number of cells in your 417066-001 battery pack (an original pack of 3 cells can have 6,9,12 cells, etc)

-for every series connection in the original pack, you can add cells in parallel. (a pack with 3 cells in series can accomodate 6 cells (pairs in parallel) in series. That is, two in parallel, and attach those pairs in series, etc) any number of cells in parallel is ok.

-NOTE: once again, do not remove the original cells from the battery pack.

My F4486B battery pack below has 3 sets of 4 cells in parallel, which are connected in series. (note: parallel groups are separated as left, middle and right. ) Wires are also connected so that I can solder the new pack to the smart circuit easily.

step 5Safety first: test the darn thing

I've seen some people who've posted how-to's for replacing laptop cells immediately replace the cells seal the battery and use it. This is extremely dangerous, unless you want to cook your F4486A laptop battery. The quality of the cells purchased is unknown, and needs to be tested. (manufacturers of laptop batteries quality test their batteries before shipping them off. And sadly, sometimes a batch can go undetected)

-Here's the tricky part (yet another thing other how-to's messed up.) The reason why I said not to disconnect the original (dead) cells from the smart circuit (which I inadvertently did. Don't worry, it was my test battery) is because the circuit requires a constant power supply or the smart circuit guage messes up. You might wonder why worry about the gauge if it doesn't contribute to charge and discharge cutoff. This is because the laptop requires a signal from the circuit before the CGR-B1870AE laptop battery will turn on (in case the cells are thought to be drained and draining more, even for a second can kill the li-ion cells. Or simply, something's wrong with the battery). So, connect the new pack to the circuit before disconnecting the original battery cells.

-However, what if you're using alligator clips, which is a temporary connection? How can you disconnect and solder on permanent connections? Either, solder on the new connections while leaving the clips connected, or you can even use a power brick with about the same voltage as the whole battery pack (a 11.1 v pack actually ranges from 12.68 v to 7 v so a power brick at 12 v is ok). But remember to add a resistor between either the anode or cathode of the power brick and the circuit, so you won't kill the circuit board. (Not connecting intermediate pins should be ok, I haven't tried. If you worry about Pavilion ZD7000 this, you can reuse your dead cell as a temporary power source while soldering on the new pack.)

-Plug in the battery circuit into the laptop and place it FAR AWAY from the battery pack. Test the battery pack. Charge is first, then completely discharge it, then charge it again. This is when you should watch over the battery pack intently, because it might explode (sand should stifle the fire, but immediately unplug the battery from the laptop.) The fear here is the type of secondary circuit used to monitor end states. End Voltage type circuit is ok, but end amperage is no good. If you can tell what PP2182D type you have just by looking at the circuitry, then you're in good shape, but if you can't there's always the fear of an explosion. From my experience, the circuit is typically end voltage.

This instructable is intended to show how one may replace the dead li-ion/li-poly cells of a laptop battery and how one may increase the capacity of the battery by adding extra cells.

The reason why adding extra cells to the internal battery is suggested compared to carrying around an external battery pack is that for the same amount of cells in an external pack, the laptop can run significantly longer if those cells were used internally.

So what's the voltage rating on your internal battery pack?

What's the rating on your power brick?

Lets use my tablet computer as an example.

The battery pack is rated for 3.7v * 3 cells or about 11volts. However, the power brick outputs 20v.

I've bought external battery pavillion zx5000 packs before and have calculated how long it should last using watt hours instead of amp hours. However, that was wrong. The battery pack would need to output 20v in order to power my tablet, thus the battery cells used to increase the voltage does not attribute to the amp hours, which is indicative of how long the battery pack should last. Thus, a difference of 9 volts is significant. That's about 2 li-ion cells wasted just to match the voltage.

Another problem with using external packs is that the laptop would think that it's connected to an outlet, thus is not so weary of watching how much power it drains. The power brick for my tablet outputs 2.5 amps, thus it is possible at times my tablet is drawing 2.5 amps from the external pack. However, the internal batt pack only requires an average of 1 amp hp zx5000 battery per hour.

So what would one do in order to increase the runtime of one's battery pack? Forget the external pack, just add more cells to the internal one.

step 2How laptop batteries work

Laptop batteries are complicated pieces of equipment. They are somewhat redundant as well. There's a 'smart circuit' in the battery pack that monitors the conditions of the battery cells, however, it does not do what a lot of people say it does.

The image below is a typical smart PP2200 battery circuit. It has four wires running out of it: ground, power, and two 'intermediary power' wires (actually the ground wire is just the tab on the right).

Lithium cells output about 3.7 volts. Like all batteries, in order to increase voltage, they are connected in series. However, charging a "pack" by adding power through the positive node and negative node of the whole battery pack is dangerous. They are not guaranteed to charge evenly (refer to resistance in series in a physics text). This means one cell may overcharge and explode, which is very bad especially since it's lithium. The intermediatary power wires are sandwhiched between every series connection of the battery pack so that it monitors each individual Pavilion dv2000 battery cell.

Now on to the nitty gritty. Most people would say not to mess around with the smart circuit, and they are correct. But if handled correctly, it won't be a problem. The core of the smart circuit does not control the charging cutoff and output cutoff when the gauge goes to 100% or 0% (older model laptops do, but not anymore). The smart circuit merely lets the enduser (laptop user) know how long they have before the battery runs out and let them turn on special options such as hibernation in order to save their work. Charging and discharging cutoff is done by a secondary monitoring circuit that monitors a one of two states called "end voltage" or "end amperage". So for those who believe hp dv2000 battery that they must charge and discharge their batteries once a month or so to "recalibrate" the battery are wrong; it only recalibrates the gauge, not the actual capacity of the battery. That is, if one is missing about 20% of their battery capacity due to the gauge being offsetted, the only reason why one would need to recalibrate is because they want to utilize the hibernation/shut off option when the capacity reaches too low. If one were to turn that option off, one can use the battery pack until it drains fully, completely ignoring the fact that the battery meter is flashing 0% (Because the meter does not control the battery's cutoff point, just the computer's). However, if the li-ion cell is dead/dying, no number of charge and discharge cycles can bring the battery back to life; the cell is physically dead HSTNN-LB31 battery (so forget about the term 'digital memory loss').

I then burnt the image at Max speed and disabled Bypass EFM error as the Plexwriter Premium can do them OK.

The result is a working 1:1 copy INSPIRON 2650 laptop battery. However it would seem that it is the bypass EFM error which causes the problem. I tried the same thing in my Laptop drive which requires the bypass setting and it didn't work. So it looks like SD3 can be copied but only with certain compatible hardware and the bypass feature no longer works.

Creative MuVo NX MP3 player review @ The Register

The Register has taken a look at Inspiron 6400 laptop battery Creative's MuVo NX MP3 player. The device is a hybrid device which means that it's basically an USB Flash storage drive that happens to play MP3 and WMA files. The device is a keychain drive and thus it's ultra portable with dimensions of only 5.2 x 2.2 x 1.3cm (2 x 0.9 x 0.5in). The MuVo NX isn't the most feature-packed of MP3 players, but it is one of the best. It is one of the smallest players we've seen that plugs straight into a USB port - and one of the lightest. Telenor launches Europe's first music service for mobile phones
